Jeffrey and Andrea Smith
Since 1996,
Jeffrey and Andrea Smith have developed a systematic method for
teaching dance, which breaks down moves into easy-to-learn components.
This, combined with their enthusiasm and humor, has made their
classes very popular with the thousands who have who have taken
them.
The Smith's
began teaching East Coast swing dance in Fairfield in 1996. In
early 1997, they happened to see a videotape of the original swing
dance called Lindy Hop, performed by the legendary Frankie Manning.
Although Frankie was about 80 years old in the video, the one-minute
clip of him was all the Smith's needed to realize that Lindy Hop
was the dance for them. Jeffrey immediately called Frankie at
his New York City home and asked where in the country he was teaching.
The next week the Smith's left for Detroit to learn Lindy Hop
from the master. Since then, the Smith's have traveled extensively
to study with the world's top Lindy Hoppers.
In 1999,
the Smiths founded Swingphoria, a Lindy Hop performance group
whose acrobatic aerials and innovative choreographies have entertained
tens of thousands in venues around Iowa.
In addition
to performing and teaching in Iowa, Jeffrey and Andrea are regularly
invited to lead weekend workshops in other states. To find out
about booking them in your area, contact jeffrey@swingsmith.com.
