Scott Lindenau, principal architect of Studio B
Architects, considered a novel approach for a house on a difficult
site near Aspen. The design would be selected by the client from
three different schemes produced by Studio B, two of which were
devised by staff architects, and the third by myself as a contract
architect. The sketches shown illustrate my scheme.
The criteria for the design included the usual Aspen zoning restrictions
of a height and floor area limit. Two other influencing factors
were that the client wanted to maximize the floor area of the house,
and that the site could only be accessed from one corner of the
lot.
If the lower bedrooms were to open to grade at the south elevation,
the maximum allowable floor area would have been exceeded. Therefore,
the lower level was designed as a basement, with lightwells providing
light and ventilation to the bedrooms. (The county zoning ordinances
relating to allowable floor area for a lot, exclude the floor area
of a basement from the total, provided that the basement is completely
below grade.) The zoning ordinance limiting the roof height also
became a factor in the design, affecting the configuration of the
roofs.
