The late Robin Molny of Aspen, designed this structure. Robin hired
me to assist him with the construction drawings and to devise the
key design details. My responsibilities also included coordination
of the various occupancies with wall, floor and roof assemblies
as related to compliance with the building code. The total floor
area is approximately 20,000 square feet. Three stories of offices
occupy the structure above grade. An athletic club occupies the
basement.
The above-grade portion of the building is heavy-timber construction
using exposed, glued-laminated wood beams and columns. The structural
system for the first floor is a post-tensioned, reinforced concrete
slab, supported on the perimeter foundation wall and interior concrete
columns. The glass at the entry lobby is a Total Vision glazing
System produced by the Pittsburg Plate Glass company.
The athletic club contains two racquet-ball courts (with structural
glass end-walls) a lap pool, a large whirlpool spa, a small gymnasium,
locker rooms and showers.
